Henry Clay Force (1832-1874) is a well documented figure in American History. While is in not in my direct line, he was the 1st husband of direct ancestor, Katherine Ogie Frierson. A number of handwritten letters From the President Rutherford B. Hayes Library Manuscript Collection have been preserved over the years.

Henry was born May 13, 1832 in Washington DC and was the son of Peter Force, a historian who wrote a documentary history of Virginia. His mother was Hannah Evans Force. Force was one of a hundred men who went on the 1850 survey expedition to settle the boundary dispute of the Mexican / American border. The letters present a facinating history of his travels.
